Story
Mia, 13-year-old – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital
In 2021, Mia was diagnosed with Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma (AFH) after discovering various cancerous tumors. Her rare cancer does not respond well to conventional treatment (chemotherapy and radiation), so surgery is required to remove tumors. Mia is mostly in a wheelchair to prevent bumps which can cause tumors to form and receives homebound education.
Shortly after diagnosis, her mother lost her job since Mia requires 24/7 care. Coping with a child’s life-threatening illness and dealing with financial strain can be daunting, however Mia’s mother has been trying to make ends meet working part-time for Uber Eats with Mia by her side.
Although Mia’s strength is inspiring and is mature beyond her years, she enjoys being a kid. Mia enjoys drawing and wishes to see her idle Bruno Mars in concert. Mia’s favorite time of the year is Christmas and is hoping Santa will visit her this year.
Needs
Mia and her mother need financial help navigating through this tough period. Although mom qualifies for low-income housing subsidy, her main worry is being able to pay their $1,200 monthly rent.
