Letter from Hospital Social Worker: Dear Supporters of Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation:
I am writing to share the story of my patient, Carlos. Carlos was first diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma in February 2024 while living in Honduras. He was in remission for a few months until he relapsed in October 2024. The rare and aggressive nature of his cancer, combined with the limited resources available in Honduras, prompted his mother, Jessica (Ale), to make and extremely difficult decision to save her son. Carlos and Ale left their home in Honduras to Miami with no support system and extremely limited finances. They arrived at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in February 2025. Prior to admission, Carlos and his mom were sleeping on an air mattress in the small apartment of a distant family relative. However, this was only a temporary situation and, thankfully, charitable lodging was secured for the family for several months. Your help would support them covering basic expenses, including food, diapers, medical needs, and transportation.
At this time, Carlos and Ale are prioritizing comfort and quality of life over all else. He is still receiving treatment to ease symptoms and relieve pain. Ale’s focus now more than ever is solely on Carlos. I know they will greatly appreciate any support that can be offered.
Kind Regards, Tiffany Gallard, LCSW Pediatric Social Worker, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital
Plea from Mother: Carlos is my five-year-old son. Like any boy of his age, he should be running, playing, and dreaming of a future full of adventures. But, since November 2023, his life took an unexpected turn: He was diagnosed with an aggressive rhabdomyosarcoma – a type of cancer that is very difficult to treat.
The disease advanced quickly and caused metastasis in different parts of his body. In Honduras, our home country, we exhausted all treatment options with the hopes of saving him. Moved by love and faith, we flew to Miami in search of better treatment and the opportunity of life for Carlos. Unfortunately, Carlos has not responded to any of the treatments given. Without fail, we stay firm in our fight, looking for new alternatives that will allow him to have quality of life, hope, and the opportunity to continue smiling, just as he always does, even when in pain.
Carlos is a brave boy, full of light, and love. Every day he shows us the true meaning of strength and reminds us that we should never give up. Today, we need your solidarity, hearts that want to join him in his battle. Your support could mark the difference in the life of our little fighter.
Sincerely, Jessica Alejandra (Mother of Carlos)
