Camila, 7-year-old – Nicklaus Children’s Hospital

Camila had been hospitalized in the ICU for 21 days in July 2021, due to complications with Covid-19, bacteria found in her blood, and Epiglottitis. After numerous follow-ups, procedures, and tests at the hospital, in December 2021, Camila’s life changed drastically when she received the devastating news that she had been diagnosed with Leukemia.

Camila resides with her single mother who is unable to earn an income while caring full-time for her. She was previously able to work from home, but because of her daughter’s continuous hospital admissions, taxing rounds of chemotherapy, and follow-ups, she was terminated from her job.

The last two years have been a rollercoaster of emotions for mom, and her beloved daughter. The financial strain of past due mortgage statements and not being able to pay for groceries and gas for the long commute to the hospital have become overwhelming.

Camila’s dream is to one day meet her idols Shakira and Messi.

Needs

Camila and her mother need urgent financial assistance to help pay for their $1,350 monthly mortgage plus past due association charges to avoid foreclosure while Camila is in the maintenance stage (final) of her cancer treatment.

Letter from Hospital Social Worker:

Dear Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation,

Camila is a 7-year-old girl who was diagnosed with Leukemia. On December 2, 2021, after many weeks of testing, procedures and follow-ups, her family was informed of her diagnosis. Camila has endured various rounds of chemotherapy and is currently receiving maintenance therapy.

Camila resides at home with her mother; her father resides separately. Her mother is a single parent, she’s her full-time caregiver and the home’s sole provider. When Camila was diagnosed, her mother was able to work from home, however, due to the frequent admissions and follow-ups, she was let go from her position. This resulted in the family undergoing extreme financial hardship and not being able to cover the home’s expenses. Anxiety and concern were prominent feelings shared by mother pertaining to finances as well as in the emotional aspect. Mother does not have any relatives locally to provide support.

Mother has attempted to seek employment that can accommodate the patient’s appointments without success. Financial resources have been exhausted. The family continues to struggle with household bills and expenses and is in need of financial support.

Plea from Mother:

My name is Yunia, mother of 7-year-old Camila. I will provide a summary of how our lives changed after Camila was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia on December 2, 2021 at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital where she still maintains her treatment.

She was going to a follow-up in the same hospital because on July 29, 2021 she was seriously hospitalized in the ICU for 21 days with a critical condition of COVID-19, bacteria in her blood, and Epiglottitis. There are no words to describe the life of each innocent person and family member who goes through these trials which we can only emerge victorious with God’s hand, and the people He sends into our lives both to heal and to provide support due to the extreme care and attention my daughter requires. I was fired at work, but at that critical moment, I only cared about my daughter’s health. I am the only provider of her home and of her needs.

I would like to thank JJCCF, a foundation truly full of human quality, love, compassion, and empathy in a moment like this. My entire family lives in Cuba and they cannot help me financially. It is very difficult not to fall into a depression when you see your daughter going through cancer and not being able to do anything other than to care for her and be by her side.

Any help will be infinitely appreciated so we can continue this battle.
