Story
Alejandro, 17 Y/O, Holtz Children’s Hospital, UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center
In November of 2010, Alejandro was diagnosed with Leukemia just after he became a teenager at age 13. The family of five lived in Ecuador and given Alejandro’s serious condition and limited medical resources there, the family was pressured to bring Alejandro to Miami to save his life. Alejandro and his family suffered the mixed progress with chemo but remained optimistic that the battle would soon end in victory.
In 2014, the family was devastated to learn Alejandro had relapsed and would now need a bone marrow transplant to save his life. In April of this year, Alejandro received the transplant at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami but remains hospitalized due to a slow recovery. The mother is living at the Ronald McDonald House in order to stay at her son’s side in this nearly 5 year battle that has plagued them emotional and financially. The mother is eager to take her son home and reunite their family but must remain for several months for follow-up treatment to ensure the transplant was a success.
