Interview After Trek (Part 2) 1/7/25

“South Florida Woman exceeds goal for South America trek to support pediatric cancer patients”

2025 is off to a great start.

Inspired by children fighting cancer, I completed the 5-day W-Trek and ice hike at Grey Glacier in the southernmost tip of the Chilean Patagonia on Christmas Day. The demanding trek in Torres del Paine National Park was 50 miles long and involved up to 10-hour hiking days in unpredictable weather and rugged terrain. Despite the many challenges, I made it to the “end of the world”. My goal of $20,000 was exceeded with over $58,000 raised!

The challenging trek is a testament of the power of mind over body. Carrying a heavy backpack on consecutive strenuous hikes without a resting day required my mental focus to control my physical feelings. After the 2nd day, my throat was hurting and I felt pain in my legs, yet I had 3 demanding days ahead. Although I was weak, quitting was not an option. Once you start the trek, there is no turning back even if you are dying; literally! There are no roads leading to the trek for rescue and no one will carry you to the finish line. I was blessed having a supportive guide and trek partner who motivated me to finish as I encountered difficult moments not knowing if I could persevere.

Separately, our Year-End Giving 4 Kids campaign raised an outstanding $101,600 (including The Wasie Foundation’s $25,000 matching grant) in 29 days! Funds raised will become emergency financial assistance (i.e., food, rent, medical electricity) and supportive care services for children and their families fighting pediatric cancer.

I am so grateful for your words of encouragement and the many generous donations made to both campaigns to benefit the children we are serving this year.

Cheers to making 2025 the best year!

Over the past 20 years, JJCCF has been a beacon of hope and support for families navigating the many challenges of pediatric cancer. Since inception, JJCCF has raised $5.3 million and helped 7,300 children and family members fight cancer. JJCCF is committed to providing supportive care services and emergency financial assistance to help families pay for everyday necessities (i.e., rent, food, medical, electricity). Our purpose is to help bridge the gap between mainstream and disadvantaged families fighting childhood cancer so that all children can have an equal chance of beating this disease.

‘Give with Confidence’ knowing JJCCF was awarded a 100 IMPACT score from Charity Navigator. This beacon measures the actual impact a charity has on the lives of those it serves and determines whether it is making good use of donor resources. Less than 1% of U.S. charities have been awarded a perfect IMPACT score.
