Mahki, 8-years-old, Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital – Broward Health Medical Center

Originally diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL) in 2015, Mahki and his Mom thought he was cured and that his battle with cancer was over. Unfortunately, he relapsed in April 2018. Mahki required additional chemo and a Bone Marrow Transplant August 2018. He still has a long road ahead of him. Mahki’s mother has always worked full-time and has been able to provide for her family. She now is unable to work as she has to care for her son and has been forced to take a leave of absence from her job. She is now struggling and unable to keep up with her bills.

Needs

Mahki and his family need help with medical expenses (those not covered by insurance), living expenses and travel expenses to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Letter from Hospital Social Worker

Dear Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation,
Mahki is an eight-year-old pediatric oncology patient at Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital at Broward Health Medical Center. I first met Mahki and his family when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in December 2015. Mahki was being treated for his leukemia in the maintenance phase when he unfortunately relapsed in April 2018. He received additional chemotherapy and was ultimately referred for a bone marrow transplant at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Mahki remains hospitalized at this time after having his transplant. Mahki’s mother was able to work full time throughout his treatment process, but had to take a leave of absence from work due to his transplant. Mahki has a long road ahead of him in which he will be monitored for complications post-transplant. Once discharged, he will require several visits weekly to Miami for his follow-up care. This family would benefit greatly from the support of the advocacy program during this difficult time. We appreciate Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation for being there to support our pediatric oncology families when they need it most.

Plea from Mahki’s Mother

Mahki’s journey started December 2, 2015 when he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He went through many phases but he was successfully cured. Mahki had resumed school where he was doing really well academically until March 2018 when Mahki relapsed. Sadly, the Leukemia had spread again. Mahki started chemotherapy to fight his battle and now the journey continues. He received a Bone Marrow transplant on 8/22/18.
As a parent, it is not something I would dream of, but it’s a struggle many families sadly go through. I have always worked full-time to provide for our household. At this time, I’m unable to work because of Mahki’s transplant as he will be in the hospital for 6-8 weeks. I am asking for anything possible for medical expenses not covered by insurance, and also added travel expenses I can no longer afford.
