Assisted Children: Individual Stories
Mother Pleas for Food While Her 4 Year Old Battles Liver Cancer

Collection Complete September 2017. Thanks to generous contributors, and JJCCF’s Financial Assistance and Advocacy programs this family benefited from having access to basic human needs during a dreadful time.

Story:

Keshinae, 4-year-old, alex’s place at Sylvester

Keshinae was only 2 years old when she was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma (liver cancer). Keshinae’s mother left Jamaica to seek medical treatment in the United States to save her child’s life. She is a single mother and is struggling to pay for basic needs while her daughter undergoes treatment. Little Keshinae has survived over 1 year of chemotherapy and 16 surgeries. It’s been extremely difficult for this mother to deal with the emotional stress of her daughter’s illness being far away from home without family or friends to help and limited financial resources.

Needs:

Keshinae and her mother need immediate help to pay for food, clothing and gas.

Message from Hospital Social Worker, 11/29/16:

My name is Ida Rodriguez, and I am the clinical social worker at University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center/alex’s place. I am writing on behalf of our patient, Keshinae.
The patient was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma in 2014 and came to the United States for medical attention. Keshinae came to the United States with her biological mother. Keshinae was hospitalized for a little over a year at Holtz Children’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Keshinae received treatment and surgeries during that time. Keshinae managed to be discharged from the hospital and now receives outpatient care at alex’s place, University of Miami/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mother reports a limited support system.
Mother asked if there were any foundations or organizations that could possibly assist with helping her meet some of the financial struggles that she mentioned; food, clothes, gas cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Warm Regards,
Ida Rodriguez, LCSW

Plea from Mother, 11/29/16:

My name is Nicole Brown and I want to thank the Jessica June Children’s Cancer Foundation for their help in my time of need and also for the opportunity to share my need for assistance at this time. My daughter, Keshinae was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma (liver cancer) at 2 years old. She then spent 14 months of aggressive chemotherapy and 16 surgeries. It is a miracle for her to be alive today and I am truly grateful. I am a single mother asking for help with my daughter for medical and living expenses. I greatly appreciate any assistance we can get during this time of need. Thank you for being a blessing and God bless you.

Nicole
